J. Nicholas Betley, Ph.D - Chief Scientist
Dr. Betley is a leading neuroscientist whose work explores one of biology’s most powerful frontiers: how dynamic, two-way communication between the body and brain governs appetite, metabolism, motivation, resilience, and the biology of aging. Trained at Boston University, Columbia University, and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Janelia Research Campus, he has helped define the neural circuitry underlying hunger, metabolic demand, and “need states,” revealing how internal physiology reshapes perception, behavior, and performance. Since founding his lab at UPenn in 2015, his research has expanded to decode how lifestyle factors—particularly diet and exercise—are translated into neural signals that influence metabolic health, cognitive function, and healthy aging.
